How a leading New York institution is opening up new tech and business careers through its Vancouver campus

This special feature is sponsored by New York Institute of Technology Vancouver, an institution specialising in graduate studies with master’s programmes in Business, Cybersecurity, and Energy Management.

You may know that New York Institute of Technology is a top-rated university as per US News and World Report, that its programmes are accredited by The Middle States Commission on Higher Education in the US, and that its MBA programmes are accredited by AACSB International. (Not to mention that New York Tech degrees are offered in Vancouver with the consent of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills in British Columbia.)

What you may not know is that New York Tech also operates a thriving campus in Vancouver, one of Canada's most dynamic and popular study destinations. The quickly growing student body of New York Tech-Vancouver is now headquartered in a state-of-the-art campus. The complex takes up 40,000 square feet and three carefully designed buildings within the Broadway Tech Centre, which is a noted hub for industry and development in the city.

Aside from its global appeal as a top study destination, Vancouver is also home to major employers like Amazon, Google, Hootsuite, Electronic Arts, Lion’s Gate Entertainment, and Lululemon Athletica. Not surprisingly, New York Tech's students and graduates find a wide range of opportunities for internships, co-ops, and post-graduate careers within the city and across Canada.

Indeed, more than 90% of New York Tech-Vancouver’s graduates stay in Canada to work and achieve residency, after which they often bring over additional members of their families. The campus is home to nearly 1,000 students today, and, as Executive Director and Campus Dean Irene Young explains, “A lot of our growth has to do with the ability of our students to find employment and stay in Canada. After graduation, they are eligible for a three-year work permit, which can lead to permanent resident status and eventually citizenship. The Government of Canada wants these students to come and to stay.”

The campus's growth also has to do with the outstanding career-oriented programmes on offer. At New York Tech-Vancouver, the focus is on graduate programmes in areas of high demand for employers. Those include a Master of Business Administration degree, with options for a general MBA or concentrations in Finance or Business Analytics; a Master of Science in Cybersecurity; and a Master in Energy Management. The latter is a distinctive programme dedicated to innovation in energy management, an area in which British Columbia and Canada aim to be world-leading.

Building the bridge from study to work

“Our students come from all over the world,” says Director of Student Affairs Shannon Svingen-Jones. “They’ve given up everything they love and care about – their families, cultures, languages, and homes – to come to New York Tech-Vancouver and further their education, and we want to welcome them all with open arms.”

New York Tech-Vancouver reflects that commitment through a wide range of student services and supports, including a vibrant campus community with many social activities, clubs, and volunteer options. That effort to support students in building up new networks and connections outside of the classroom is backed by strong career services. New York Tech-Vancouver students have access to a variety of tutoring services, career workshops, and career counselling – all of which are designed to ease their transition to Canada and then on to their professional lives after their studies.

"I have been very lucky to have an outstanding support system offered by the school and professors, which enables me to have an incredible learning experience and pushes me to succeed," says Master of Energy Management graduate Meng Yuan. "The free tutoring services have been invaluable in helping me succeed academically. Student life have organised a range of activities that have enriched my study life, allowed me to meet like-minded individuals, and made me feel more connected to the community. Another significant benefit of studying at New York Tech-Vancouver was the on-campus, part-time job opportunities available to students. I was fortunate enough to secure a position in the Registrar's Office, which not only provided me with invaluable local work experience but also facilitated my transition to a new country. I am confident that this experience will give me a competitive edge in the job market and help me achieve my career goals."

"New York Tech has exceeded all of my expectations," adds Master of Science in Cybersecurity graduate Ankan Garg. "There is no better location than the Cybersecurity programme at New York Tech-Vancouver in beautiful British Columbia. I have gained first-hand Canadian work experience with my first full-time internship as a Cybersecurity Analyst, I was also able to learn from the best professors and mentors, as well as collaborating with a diverse community of students."
